Beading as Medicine: The Story Behind Venus’s Beaded Expressions

We are incredibly honored to feature Venus Battaglia - Owner of VENUS'S BEADED EXPRESSIONS. After seeing some of her phenomenal works posted on Facebook, we were compelled to reach out to her to get some creative insight on her inspiration to create such magnificent works of wearable art. This is her story...

I am a married mother of four, rooted in family, tradition, and community. I am a proud member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, and I reside on our Little River ancestral lands in Manistee, Michigan. This land holds the stories of my ancestors, and it continues to inspire the work of my hands and heart every day.

Beading and sewing have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. These skills were lovingly passed down to me by my mother and grandmother, who taught me not only the techniques, but the patience, care, and intention that beadwork requires. Every stitch carries their teachings, and every piece I create is a continuation of that lineage.

Beyond my work as an artist, I am also a dancer and a teacher within my community. Movement, learning, and creativity are all interconnected for me—they are ways of sharing knowledge, honoring culture, and keeping traditions alive for future generations.
My beading journey led to the creation of my small business, Venus’s Beaded Expressions. Through this work, I design jewelry for those who want to express themselves in a way that is both traditional and modern. Each piece is made with intention, blending cultural roots with contemporary expression, allowing the wearer to feel connected, seen, and empowered.

For me, beading is more than art—it is medicine. It is a form of healing, reflection, and balance. Where some people pick up a book while on vacation, I pick up my beads. The rhythm of beading grounds me, calms my spirit, and strengthens my connection to my ancestors and my community.

Venus’s Beaded Expressions is not just about jewelry; it is about storytelling, resilience, and self-expression. Each piece carries meaning, tradition, and love—made to be worn, shared, and cherished.
