10TH CALVARY - BREAKDOWN AND SYNOPSIS

Story and Art by D.Marquis

In the aftermath of the Civil War, the United States finds itself grappling with westward expansion, lawlessness, and lingering scars of a divided nation. Amid this tumultuous landscape, an elite regiment of Buffalo Soldiers—comprised of African American cavalrymen—stands as a beacon of honor and resilience. Led by the indomitable Colonel Jeremiah Davis, a war hero with unshakable faith in his men and their mission, these soldiers are tasked with the U.S. military's most dangerous and morally complex assignments.

In this graphic novel series, readers will follow the regiment as they navigate the harsh terrain of the American West, contending with the dual enemies of external threats and internal prejudice. Their missions are as diverse as they are perilous: negotiating fragile truces with neutral Native American tribes, confronting violent rogue factions, bringing ruthless outlaws to justice, and facing outright hostility from their own commanders and countrymen. Each assignment tests not only their physical endurance but their moral compass, as they strive to balance duty with justice in a land rife with inequality.

Colonel Davis, a man of deep conviction and layered complexity, serves as the glue that holds the regiment together. With a mix of battlefield ingenuity and fatherly care, he inspires his soldiers to rise above their “second-class” status, reminding them that their service transcends the uniform—it’s a testament to their character and courage. Alongside Davis are a cast of richly developed characters, each bringing their own skills, struggles, and perspectives to the fold, from sharpshooter Sergeant Ezra "Hawk-Eye" Hawkins to empathetic medic Corporal Samuel Greene.

As the regiment’s story unfolds, the series explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, identity, and the quest for dignity in a country still learning how to live up to its founding ideals. Against the backdrop of sweeping desert vistas, bustling frontier towns, and the raw beauty of uncharted lands, the Buffalo Soldiers stand tall—not just as warriors, but as symbols of hope and perseverance.

Equal parts historical drama, action-packed adventure, and poignant character study, this graphic novel series invites readers to experience the untold stories of the Buffalo Soldiers. Through stunning visuals and compelling storytelling, it illuminates a chapter of American history often overlooked, celebrating the indomitable spirit of men who fought not only for survival but for the promise of a better tomorrow.
