Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, and over time, many different styles have emerged. One of the most recent additions to the world of yoga is Kundalini Yoga, a style that focuses on helping practitioners connect with their inner fire and cultivate a sense of warmth and energy in their bodies. We met up with Instructor Shakeesha Semone who introduced us to this method.

Kundalini Yoga is based on the idea that we all have a spark of energy within us, and that by nurturing and nourishing this energy, we can experience greater vitality, creativity, and joy in our lives. The practice is designed to help practitioners tap into this inner fire, building strength, flexibility, and balance both physically and mentally.

At the heart of this style is the concept of "Agni," a Sanskrit word that means "fire" or "digestive fire." In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Agni is believed to be responsible for breaking down and digesting the food we eat, as well as helping to transform thoughts, emotions, and experiences into positive energy.

In Kundalini Yoga, practitioners use various physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation practices to stimulate and enhance their Agni, helping to generate heat and energy in the body. Some common practices in Kundalini Yoga include:

Sun Salutations: This classic yoga sequence involves a series of postures that are performed in a flowing, rhythmic sequence. Sun salutations are often used at the beginning of a KundaliniYoga practice to warm up the body and awaken the inner fire.

Breathwork: Kundalini Yoga incorporates various breathing exercises, such as Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath) and Ujjayi (victorious breath), which can help to stimulate the Agni and generate heat in the body.

Balancing Postures: Many Kundalini Yoga sequences include balancing postures, such as tree pose and eagle pose. These postures help to build strength and stability in the body, while also cultivating focus and concentration.

Core work: Kundalini Yoga also emphasizes core strength, with many sequences including postures that target the abdominal muscles, such as boat pose and plank pose.

Meditation: Finally, Kundalini Yoga often includes a period of meditation or deep relaxation at the end of the practice. This can help practitioners to connect with their inner fire on a deeper level, and to cultivate a sense of inner calm and peace.
